A brief History of the Scone Run

I asked one of the core members for a brief history,  what I got requires a whole page but it is interesting stuff ! It is a good read and could one day be a part of Isle of Man history. You could be too ! Click here

Can I join in?

The riders congregate at Kirk Michael at the front of the Isle of Man Bank, the pack leaves in single file through the village at around 09.40am (depending on how much chit chat occurs) each Saturday. Only heavy rain or extreme conditions deter the regulars. Splinter groups start from Peel and Ramsey (Shoprite car park) around 08:50am. Some keener individuals have been known to start from Douglas or even Ballabeg!

The round trip Kirk Michael-Sconerun-Kirk Michael is between 35 and 40 miles at a steady pace of around 15mph average, though due to the popularity of the chain gangs in recent times efforts are being made to split the peleton into two smaller groups. The faster pace for the keener individuals and a more sedate speed for newcomers and any wanting a steadier ride.

The entire group will ride the first five or six miles together and will, when necessary, split up close to the Ballaugh Cronk around 9.50am. All will meet up again at the Sulby Glen for the refreshments. The return ride to Kirk Michael is again via the back roads and lanes. The group normally reaches Kirk Michael around 12.45pm, but others wanting to have shorter or longer rides can tailor their start and finishing points to suit.

So, if you wish to improve your fitness, your cycling techniques and gastronomic skills, please feel free to join this friendly group of mixed ages and genders. The only stipulation is for individuals of a reasonable pace and fitness, with reliable road or hybrid-style bikes in good working order suitable for a mid-distance cycle.

Oh, and don’t forget to bring £2.50 for the tea/coffee and scone !
